Società Toscana di Scienze Naturali

This Institution was founded on April 12th 1874 by a small group of scientists under the leadership of Giuseppe Meneghini, who was the first President. Its mission was fostering and supporting scientific activities carried out in the disciplinar ambitus of Natural Sciences and to publish the scientific work of its members. Benchmarks of this activity are the Society journal (“Atti”, i.e. “proceedings”), its library and the Natural History Museums.

The Scientific Museums that have been created through times under the auspices of the Società Toscana di Scienze Naturali, have been incorporated in 1985 in the Museo di Storia Naturale e del Territorio of Pisa University (http://www.msn.unipi.it).

Giuseppe Meneghini (1874 – 1889), Sebastiano Richiardi (1890 – 1903), Giovanni Arcangeli (1904 – 1920), Mario Canavari (1921 – 1928), Biagio Longo (1929 – 1930), Leopoldo Granata (1931 – 1937), Giuseppe Stefanini (1938), Alberto Chiarugi (1939 – 1950), Mario Benazzi (1951 – 1961; 1964 – 1983), Livio Trevisan (1962 – 1964; 1984 – 1989), Paolo Meletti (1990-1993), Marco Tongiorgi (1994 – 2005), Stefano Merlino (2006- 2010), Paolo Roberto Federici (2011 - ).
